Frequently Asked Questions

What Clients Ask

What should you avoid after a massage?

After a massage, be sure to avoid smoking, drinking alcohol or ingesting caffeine and sugary or salty foods. Muscles in your body tend to be a storage site for toxins that haven’t been removed through urination, faeces or sweat. After a massage, these toxins are released back into the body—so the best thing to do is increase hydration to aid in the removal of these toxins. We recommend drinking 2L of water a day, especially in the days following your treatment.

Activities that cause dehydration could result in the reabsorption of these toxins, along with other symptoms like cramping, spasming, headaches, muscular aching and general soreness—which is why we recommend staying away from salty and sugary foods. Why do I feel tender after my massage?

You likely feel tender the next day because long-held toxins, stored in your muscles and lymphatic system, are flooded back into your body through deep tissue manipulation. This may be a big shock to the system, which is why we recommend drinking between to 2–2.5L of water a day following a massage. This will help flush the toxins from your body and improve circulation, your immune system and your energy levels. If these feelings continue for more than a day, please consult your doctor.

Feeling sick, especially after a deep tissue massage, is normal and a sign that the treatment has been successful. Stay on top of this with measured breathing, low sugar/salt foods and hydration.

What is the difference between Swedish (relaxation) massage & deep tissue massage?

Swedish massage tends to be lighter and more relaxation-based than a deep tissue massage. Using long, measured strokes and soft kneading, Swedish massage techniques are gentle and used to provide general relaxation and improved circulation. Deep tissue massage is more forceful and reduces tightness held deep in the muscles and connective tissues.

Each is effective for different reasons. Swedish massage is great for circulation and relaxation, helping remove adhesions in the muscles without putting the body under any great pressure. Deep tissue massage is much more beneficial for people suffering from chronic pain, ongoing injuries and restrictive movements.

Is a massage always appropriate?

No. There are many medical conditions that may be negatively affected by massage. That’s why it’s important that your massage therapist asks you general health questions before beginning a session. If you have an injury, chronic condition or disease that you think could be affected by massage, be sure to first speak with your doctor or disclose the information to your massage therapist.
